This is a heartfelt, "front-porch" solo, vocal & guitar version of a straight-up, country-blues track about falling in love on the 4th of July and enjoying all the 4th of July festivities in small towns everywhere across America. The roots of this song come from the 1950's in a village where I lived in as a kid and the village we raised our kids in. As kids, we all washed our bikes early in the morning and dressed them up for the parade and a day of speeding from event to event. We rode bikes to the American Legion Hall for a pancake breakfast and hung with the veterans who were all wearing their veteran's caps and vests and there were all smiling and happy to see us. They all had their convertibles all clean and shiny and parked in the parking lot for people to come and look at. Usually they passed out popcorn balls and lollypops to all of us kids to help keep our energy up from all the bike peddling our young legs were enduring. We also attached playing cards to back wheel frames of our bikes with wooden clothes-pins, so the cards stuck in between the bike spokes and the spokes swept across the cards creating a fluttering sound. We thought it was so cool and it WAS! And we had flags taped to our bikes, with streamers attached to the handlebars and then headed to the town's parade, tickling our bike bells, as the parade weaved it's way thru the heart of town. And of course, there was a lot of love in the air as teenagers were enjoying a "date day" of flirting and stealing a kiss during the fireworks at night. This is an honest, authentic and sweet nostalgic tune, just what we need today and this year. I love the 4th of July. It's a day for remembering and giving thanks! Verse 1
It was Independence Day
On the village green
I kissed you at the pancake breakfast
We were falling in love and barely eighteen
Horns, drums and 21 guns
Led the parade
As people lined up on Main Street
In their folding chairs sipping lemonade
Chorus
Red, white and blue
Red, white and blue
All the memories of the day I fell in love with you
Are painted red, white and blue
Verse 2
Then we walked along the river
To the country fair
Strolled the lights of the Midway
Hand ‘n hand in the evening air
There was lipstick on my collar
Fireworks filled your eyes
We swore with sweet, summer wine
To always remember that 4th of July
Repeat Chorus
Red, white and blue
Red, white and blue
All the memories of the day I fell in love with you
Are painted red, white and blue
Bridge
So, we bought a little house in the heart of town
And it’s where we settled down
We’ve got front row seats every year
Stars and strips march through town
Repeat Chorus.
Red, white and blue
Red, white and blue
All the memories of the day I fell in love with you
Are painted red, white and blue
