To be alone can be a pleasure, but loneliness haunts us all
The woman strummed on silver strings
Sang songs of wonderful things
And of the joy that love brings
Her lover left and the loneliness stings
Out on the streets she looks over her shoulder

She wonders why it made her cry

The flags are flying upside down
From the crosses on the hill
The steps of the dancer
And the songs of waking
Are suddenly very still
Their nation of two, their sanctuary
Grew silver wings and flew away

The games of making up children’s names
Her prince charming
Turned out to be very alarming
